October 2005
Distance: 18 miles
This is so long ago I can't
really remember what happened on this ride but I recall it came about
because Howard had never been to Tripsdale. Some kind of oversight there,
how could we have not shown him the awesome descent, over a mile of
sketchy downhill, loose rock, drainage gullies and hairpin bends before a
final brakes off runout over the stream, unfortunately not through the
stream as it was a few years ago.
Setting off from Lordstones we
flowed along the singletrack to Clay Bank before shouldering the bikes for
the haul up onto Urra Moor, then the steady drag up to Round Hill (highest
point of the North York Moors) and across the moor. Utilising some tracks
of dubious legality, we made our way to Stump Cross above Bransdale, where
we turned off onto the bridleway across Slape Wath Moor and down, down,
down to Tripsdale. Then it was wait, wait, wait while Chris made his way
more cautiously to meet us. Up, up, up we climbed out of the Tripsdale
valley, along the escarpment overlooking Bilsdale and down through a
slightly muddy East Bank Plantation to Chop Gate.
Climbing steadily up the
Raisdale Road, we turned off to Beak Hills in the valley between Cold Moor
and Cringle Moor to rejoin the singletrack back to Lordstones and it's
welcoming cafe.
