Scottoiler
Active
Fluid System.
More than just
another chain lube, Scottoiler could best be described as manually
operated oil pump, dispensing Scottoiler Active fluid to the chain on
demand. The Active fluid is a blend of mineral oil, special additives and
water, the water evaporates leaving a concentrated layer of protective
deposit which lubricates and protects the chain. The usual grinding paste
of oil and dirt sits on top of the protective layer so it can be washed
off with ordinary water. Three squirts while pedalling is enough to relube
the whole chain, with the added advantage that any fresh crud on the chain
is flushed off by the water component of the Active Fluid.
Fitting is
straightforward using the supplied instructions and the fitting kit more
than comprehensive. The replacement jockey wheel is hollow and dispenses
the lube through small holes onto the chain, the only other components are
the reservoir and the pump, or 'squid' as Scottoiler call it. The
reservoir fits behind the seat tube and the squid may be mounted in any
convenient place, Scottoiler suggest either beneath the crossbar or on the
handlebars. Connect the delivery tubes and it's ready to go. Scottoiler
also
supply a bottle of cleaning fluid to clean the chain prior to the first
application of Active Fluid.
Two wet rides over
the North York Moors, on sandy tracks and through peat quagmires
(see TTB031) gave the Scottoiler a
harsh baptism. Squeezing the squid during the ride kept the chain running
smoothly and free from the dreaded chain suck, three squirts pedalling
back to the car park and I was putting my bike away with a pristine chain.
Well, significantly cleaner than the chains on the other lad's bikes
anyway.
Although more of
the Active Fluid is used than other lubes, it claims to prolong the life
of the chain and drivetrain, meaning less money spent on chains and other
components. I'll certainly be using the Scottoiler over the coming winter
and hopefully getting more than my usual three months from a chain.
